Jock Itch is a dermatophyte (fungus that causes skin diseases in humans and animals) fungal infection of the groin region in both males and females. It has been observed that the skin infection is more common in males rather than females. Medically known as ‘tinea cruris’, jock itch is known by various names like ‘crotch itch’, eczema marginatum’, ‘gym itch’, ‘ringworm of the groin’ and the Dhobi Itch.
Due to the jock itch, there is considerable itching in the affected area with or without a burning sensation in the groin region, anus, perineum, perianal and thigh skin folds. Due to the jock itch, the area can appear brown, tanned or reddish with cracked skin, peeling or flaking of the skin.
The acute infection of Jock Itch begins in the form of a half- inch area in the groin fold on both sides Due to itching; the area can enlarge in no specific pattern in an amoeba like shape. The rash forms scaly patches with bonders that are sharply defined, capable of oozing and erupting like blisters. As the rash advances, it can move along the inner thigh, looks scaly and redder than the area which is originally infected. The area can also be infected with Candida (fungus that causes genital infections); when this happens the rash is wetter and redder.
Lamisil(terbinafine topical) is the best medication for the treatment of Jock Itch. It can prevent the fungus from growing on the groin area. Your doctor will prescribe the appropriate dosage for you. Since it is a prescription medicine, you should not take it without consulting a doctor or a skin specialist.
Apply the medicine as advised by the doctor. Do not put it in larger amounts than recommended. The prescription label will have the right direction of application of the medicine. Make sure you wash the hands before using the medication; you should clean and dry the area before applying Lamisil.
Lamisil side effects when used for Jock Itch
Lamisil has side effects only in rare cases. So in case, after using terbinafine topical, you develop more itching, redness of the skin, drying of the skin, severe blistering and skin irritation, stop the medication and check with your doctor. You have to seek emergency medical help if you get an allergic reaction in the form of difficulty in breathing, swelling of face, lips etc and hives. Precautions while taking Lamisil for Jock Itch
